My name is Barb Smith. This is my fifth year teaching media journalism at Willow Springs Middle School.
I am a graduate of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where I majored in English. Before teaching, I spent over 30 years in both radio and television news. I've filled many roles over my career working for all four major television networks in several markets including Dallas, Kansas City, and Cincinnati. I've been a reporter, producer, news anchor, editor and even reported traffic on WFAA and CBS 11. One of my most memorable jobs was the traffic reporter on 1310 The Ticket Radio station.
People often ask why I would walk away from a career in media to become a teacher. I’ve had a successful career and want to share my experiences with students. Technology is drastically changing the way we get our news and I want to make sure we bring up the next generation of journalists prepared with the tools needed to be successful.
I am married to Matthew Smith, probably the biggest Kansas City Jayhawk fan in the nation. I have three daughters and one grandchild. Chloe will be in the 8th grade here at WSMS this year. She plays soccer, basketball and loves to create videos and fool people with card tricks! Brigitte, my middle child, graduated from SMU and is now a successful musician. You can hear her two bands, "TBA" and "Brigitte Mena," playing all over DFW. Ashley, my oldest, is married to Chad Coleman. They both met at the University of Arkansas. They recently moved home from Carlsbad, California to North Texas. Chad works for Dude Perfect. I am so happy they are home as I can spend time with my granddaughter, Ella Mae. She just turned two this summer!
I love history, political science, art, technology, animals, mountains and the ocean! I have two boxer dogs -- Baxter and Bessie.
I look forward to meeting my new students every year and teaching them about my passion!
