My name is Barb Smith. I feel completely honored and blessed to teach media journalism at Willow Springs Middle School.

I am a graduate of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where I majored in English.  For the past 25 years, I have had the opportunity experience major market media with a variety of award winning news operations ranging from television and radio to sales and marketing. I’ve held multiple roles at all major networks: Fox (WDAF & KDFW), NBC (KXAS), ABC (WFAA), and CBS (KTVT & WLWT).  In addition, I’ve been a news anchor, reporter, producer, traffic anchor, assignment editor and a news director; working in small markets like Lawrence, Kansas, medium markets in Cincinnati and Kansas City, and finally back home to the #5 market in Dallas, Texas.

Dallas is where I started out as one of the first female airborne traffic reporters in the nation. I’ve had a wonderful career and was blessed to have worked with many DFW radio legends -- like Gordon Keith, George Dunham, Craig Miller, Mike Rhyner and Corby Davidson at 1310 The Ticket. I worked with Tom Joyner (K104), Red Beard (Q-102), Ron Chapman & Ken Barnett (KVIL), and Bo Roberts & Jim White (KZPS and 93.3 The Bone.)

People often ask why I would walk away from a career in media to become a teacher.   I’ve had a successful career and want to share my experiences with students. Technology is drastically changing the way we get our news and I want to make sure we bring up the next generation of journalists prepared with the tools needed to be successful.

I am married to Matthew Smith, probably the biggest Kansas City Jayhawk fan in the nation.  We have three beautiful daughters. My oldest, Ashley Coleman, 27, has a Master of Early Childhood Education from The University of Arkansas and is a kindergarten teacher in Carlsbad, California. My middle daughter, Brigitte Mena, is working on her Master of Education from Southern Methodist University. She had the opportunity to teach third graders in Highland Park as a long term substitute over this past year. She's also a talented vocalist and was awarded an incredible scholarship to SMU.  Chloe is my baby and will be in the 4th grade in 2016-17. She's a tough soccer player for Andromeda and also loves to vlog.

I love history, political science, art, technology, animals, mountains and the ocean! I have two boxer dogs -- Baxter and Bessie -- and a full blooded persian cat named Pearl.

I look forward to meeting my new students and the opportunities of another successful year in media journalism.
