"You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play it better than anyone else." Albert Einstein
Anything can be seen as a game. The realization of what is expected and the plan to meet that expectation defines success in every aspect of learning.
My call to teaching came during my college years as I was volunteering at the Buckner Children's Home in Lubbock,Texas. Each week I was surrounded by children who had been abandoned by their families, forgotten by their friends, and 'given-up' on by society. I witnessed the power one individual can have to change the path of a child and vowed to be that facilitator of change.
As I enter my 18th year of teaching, I am continually amazed by what I learn from my students. I began my career in 1994 at a rural Tennessee school, and have been blessed to teach a variety of grade levels within the disciplines of mathematics and science. My family inspires me to always push beyond myself. Matthew is an avid car enthusiast, chef, and athlete while Cailin (a senior at LHS this year!) competes in sand volleyball and has inherited a love of cars from her dad and a love of football from her momma! We enjoy training together as a family, serving in our local church, and challenging each other to reach different goals.
My favorite part of teaching is building relationships with my students. They are such unique vessels that bring varied interests and talents. No two years are ever the same and I absolutely love the changing dynamics from year to year. It is a joy to meet the academic and social needs of these learners while empowering them to think beyond themselves. I am thrilled to be back for my eighth year as a Lovejoy Leopard!
I look forward to an incredible 2016-2017 year at WSMS!
